New Jersey Bicycle Summit Conveniently Meeting in Denville

The New Jersey Bicycle Coalition is hosting a bicycle summit for the state on February 27, 2010. I feel really lucky that this is happening, and especially that it is meeting so close to Morristown. Sign up early, registration is limited to 130. I’m hoping it fills up fast! Here’s the blurb:

We have an exciting agenda planned for the day. Our keynote speaker, Andy Clarke, Executive Director of LAB (League of American Bicyclists), will open the Summit and the first segment of the day will highlight the relationship between the cycling community and both the New Jersey Department of Transportation and the New Jersey legislature (the latter on current and planned legislation.)

Following will be a presentation of projects in process around the state, presented by a number of speakers, and will highlight cycling education, Complete Streets legislation, and regional cycling advocacy.

Complete Streets, a very important issue in the advocacy world, will get a more intensive examination after lunch through a presentation by members of the RBA Group, a multidisciplined firm of engineers, architects, and planners who work closely with NJDOT on bicycle planning.

After lunch, which is included in the registration fee, Jeff Miller of the Alliance for Biking and Walking will speak about Grass Roots Action; and Tim Blumenthal of Bikes Belong will motivate us to get to work with his address which will close the summit.

This is a preliminary agenda and will probably be changed a bit but this gives you a broad idea of what will be covered. Of course, coming out of the day will be what we will be looking for when we go into it – a cohesive vision with short, medium and long-term goals, and the steps we need to take to achieve them.

The Summit’s intent is to unify efforts of New Jersey advocacy organizations, bring the concerns of New Jersey’s cyclists to the attention of state and local authorities, as well as the general public. The result will include a set of unified short and long-term goals so we can all “Bicycle Safer in NJ.”

*Summit attendance is limited to 130 so early registration is encouraged. *The registration fee is $40 for non-NJBC members and includes a one-year membership in the Coalition (NJBC members may register for $25). Date is 2/27/09 from 8 am to 4 pm.
