Bike Video Thursday: Driving Public Service Announcements

There have been quite a few people stumbling on this blog this week, sadly looking for info on the two people, Carmelo Garcia Lopez and Ivan Canuto Delacruz, who were hit by a car this week and killed.  The latest news article in the Daily Record says that the driver Christopher Hoppe, is now out on bail.  When this story first broke, my first reaction was, “we need to give away bike lights!”  I still think that is true.  I do think it is clear that with this particular accident, there were a lot of things going on.  It seems like the driver was drinking, speeding at 60 or 70 mph in a 25 mph zone, maybe crossed to the the other side of the road, and after hitting the bicyclists, just left the scene.

Anyhow, here is a series of driving public services announcements; the first two are pretty tame, but seriously, do not watch the rest of them if you are upset easily.   Feel free to use this thread to get out whatever you want about traffic, what merits jail time, a better psa and whatever things this and the other bike/car accidents recently have got you pissed about.  Or not.

I couldn’t find a good PSA and cell phones and driving.

  1. I think I read about a case earlier this week where someone in New Jersey did get jail time for a bike-car accident, but I can’t find it. Here’s a opinion piece in the Daily Record just about bikes.

  2. Here’s a blurb from the Star Ledger and it mentions if you want to donate, maybe contact Outback Steakhouse.

A wake will be held for Lopez and Delacruz today from 5 to 9 p.m. at Parsippany Funeral Service on North Beverwyck Road in Lake Hiawatha. The bodies may be flown home to Mexico as early as this weekend. Part of the cost is being picked up by a fund earmarked for such purposes by the Mexican consulate. The balance is being donated in funds collected by their employer, Outback Steakhouse.

As of yesterday, more than $3,600 has been donated, in amounts ranging from $5 to one individual’s gift of $1,000. “This is just an outpouring from the community, and it’s nice to see,” said John Tirch, managing partner. “It just such a tragedy.”

It seems like 100,000 is a little low for bail after running two people over and then trying to cover it up?

  3. This videos got a shot of biker dude weaving back and forth in the road. I like his choice of ‘line’, well out of the door prize zone, but that strange weaving bit in the one shot would have any driver nervous. But maybe that was his intention?

  4. I dont think I wanna watch the other videos. Lotsa bike crashes lately, motorbikes too. They’ve got the same issues bikes have. Cars look out for other cars. Our different ‘shape’ is somehow not really on their ‘radar’. How often do you bike by cars that just dont seem to see you?
